Last week, I posed several must attend events in Fort Lauderdale. This week I am heading further afield into Broward County to present more events in Fort Lauderdale and beyond this Labor Day Weekend 2015. First I will head over to Davie. Flamingo Gardens, located on wait for it…. Flamingo Road is offering half-price entry this Labor Day 2015. Included in this adventure are a Native Bird Festival and a narrated tram tour of the grounds. Of course attendees can all enjoy many botanical attractions on offer including the famous Flamingo in all their glory. One word comes to mind when I visit Flamingo Gardens…Zen. If you have never ventured over to Flamingo Gardens, I have no hesitation in recommending this attraction to you. It is well worth the money and effort in getting there, I promise.

But first… And as you know there is always a first, let's discuss the true meaning of this festive weekend. Labor day is a celebration of the American labor movement. It is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of all workers, the backbone of our society. It first became a national day in the year 1887 and passed a law by President Grover Cleveland. 10 Shortcuts to Make Your Move Easier By Suzanne De Vita Near or far, there’s no shortage of challenges when it comes to moving. Between organizing an entire household, changing addresses and vetting out movers, relocating to a new home can be more hectic than happy. And the biggest stressor of all? Packing. To help alleviate some of that stress, we’ve compiled a list of clever shortcuts that will ease the burden of packing before (and unpacking after) a move. 1. Find Freebies – Forget buying boxes. Pick up free ones through Freecycle.org or the “free stuff” section on Craigslist, both of which list items by location. If you can, seek out boxes of varying sizes. And skip the supermarket cartons–they may contain food residue. 2. Pack to Unpack – The hardest part about packing is figuring out where to start. When boxing up your belongings, start in the kitchen, which typically houses the most items that are not everyday essentials. When you arrive at your new home, unpack your bedroom first, and leave the kitchen for last.

Do you remember as a child the thrill of the big top? The red and white topped tent that meandered into town? The circus, mainly presented by Barnum and Bailey infused the air with a palatable thrill each and every time they came to our area? Over the years, there have been many of these events in Broward County.  I am sure many of my generation recall the clowns, acrobats, trapeze acts, musicians, tightrope walkers, unicycles and my absolute favorite, the tightrope walkers. And I will never forget the smell of popcorn.,, Move forward to the 21st century and some things change and thank goodness, many things stay the same. Arriving at our doors is the world  famous Cirque Du Soleil, the largest theatrical production company in the world. This company’s productions, in my opinion, are the continuation and development of the old time circus.

To many, the epitome of 20-century art is the infamous Pablo Picasso. This week's event in Fort Lauderdale takes us to the NSU Art Museum located at 1 East Las Olas Boulevard. Lucky us, all Broward County residents and visitors alike, are privy to his collection of “Painted Ceramics and Works on Paper” from the years 1931 to 1971. The collection includes 72 modern day works of art including 14 etchings. Many of these items are owned by the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale while others are on loan from world wide collectors. A bit of background on Pablo Ruiz Y Picasso includes the following: He was born in Spain in 1881. He spent most of his adult life, working as a painter and sculpture. He also designed theatrical stages in addition to being a poet and playwright. Along with Georges Braque he co-founded the art form of collage; Assembling magazine, ribbons, paint, newspaper clippings, and other art items to create a new image. Sadness and nostalgia are reflected in his early works. These emotions are obvious to any atten[mortgage mortgage_term="30"]ding this event in Fort Lauderdale. This sentiment, it is said were brought about by the death of his seven-year-old sister.

Fort Lauderdale Event | South Florida Book Festival I simply adore a good book. Each year I look forward to this Fort Lauderdale Event, the South Florida Book Festival. Whether I am reading at the poolside, at my local Starbucks or snuggled up in bed, I enjoy the journey taken when I have a book between my ten digits.  And kindly note, I said a book, not some computerized version of the reading material. I like a book with pages. A book takes me back to the bygone days when life was slower and a bit more gentle. This week’s Fort Lauderdale Event, the South Florida Book Festival is off and running this weekend. The well-renowned journalist and television host, Travis Smiley will be in attendance… need I say more!!

Events in Fort Lauderdale, June 5, 2015 Living in South Florida simply gets better each day. There are so many events in Fort Lauderdale to attend and experiences to have in our neck of the woods. Life it is never boring or sedate here. Some would say residing in this corner of the USA is magical. I most emphatically agree. We are so lucky to have the ability to live an outdoors life twelve months of the year. Some say it is too hot and humid to spend time out in the grand outdoors in the summer months.

Residential Construction Activity Moves Up in April The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Census Bureau jointly announced the new residential construction statistics for April 2015. Building Permits Privately owned housing units authorized by building permits in April were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,143,000. This is 10.1 percent (±2.2 percent) above the revised March rate of 1,038,000, and is 6.4 percent (±2.1 percent) above the April 2014 estimate of 1,074,000. Single-family authorizations in April were at a rate of 666,000; this is 3.7 percent (±0.9 percent) above the revised March figure of 642,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 444,000 in April.
