Fort Lauderdale Event | South Florida Book FestivalFort Lauderdale Event | South Florida Book Festival

I simply adore a good book. Each year I look forward to this Fort Lauderdale Event, the South Florida Book Festival. Whether I am reading at the poolside, at my local Starbucks or snuggled up in bed, I enjoy the journey taken when I have a book between my ten digits.  And kindly note, I said a book, not some computerized version of the reading material. I like a book with pages. A book takes me back to the bygone days when life was slower and a bit more gentle.

This week’s Fort Lauderdale Event, the South Florida Book Festival is off and running this weekend. The well-renowned journalist and television host, Travis Smiley will be in attendance… need I say more!!

This event is one of our nation’s most prestigious book festivals. The affair takes place this weekend on July 17 and 18 at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) at 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.

Here is a breakdown of the weekend events:

July 17 (Friday) at 6:30 PM – A commencement ceremony including a black tie event, with offerings of tasty nibbles and hors d’oeuvres. During this evening, attendees will have the pleasure of meeting the featured authors including:

  • Christian fiction authors S. James Guitard, Reshona Tate Billingsley and Victoria Christopher Murray
  • Haitian  Women writers Maria Ketsia Theodore- Pharel, Mahalia Solages, Michele- Jessica Fievre and Joanne Hyppolite.
  • Urban Fiction authors Mary Morrison and Wahida Clark
  • Caribbean Author and Publisher Suzette Farquharson-Morgan

July 18 will start off at 10 AM with live panel discussions, book readings, and book signing.

First on hand is the infamous Pulitzer Prize winner Mr. Nick Chiles and his attorney, Robbin Shipp.  The pair will be addressing a nationwide topic, and dare I say a  very  timely new item concerning the American justice system and African-American men. Both gentlemen co-wrote the book entitled Justice While Black: Helping African-American Families Navigate in the Criminal Justice System.

Next up is the New York times best-selling writer, Eric Jerome Dickey, who has over 21 best-selling books under his belt. Mr, Dickey will  present his sensational thriller, One Night

Amongst other others and speakers, Travis Smiley will be reviewing, presenting and signing his most latest book, My Journey With Maya Angelou. In my “book” this is a must attend event!

See you there!
