12th Annual Polynesian Cultural Festival

Do you want to get away from it all, do you need some time to just really relax and clear your mind?  What better way to do so then sit back and enjoy the music of the Polynesian Islands and take a vacation in your mind. The Polynesian Culture Association is presenting their highly anticipated 12th Annual Polynesian Cultural Festival on Saturday, February 21st and Sunday, February 22nd at the Jaco Pastorius Park.  It is located at 4000 North Dixie Highway, Oakland Park.   This one of a kind showcase is the most prestigious reflection of the Polynesian culture in the state of Florida.  Many people recognize the Polynesian Islands as a Pacific paradise vacation getaway.  This annual festival is a way to bring their culture to the community, by expanding the knowledge and educating, promoting, and preserving ancient, traditional, interpretive and modern aspects of Polynesian culture and heritage.

The festival will take on place from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. on both days, allowing plenty of time to take it all in.  There will traditional hula dancers, demonstrating the words of the mele, a Hawaiian song, through a visual dance.  The fire and knife dancers, are sure to get your heart pumping as you watch them twirl their war knife, lite with fire, a fierce traditional pre-war ritual in Samoa used to psyche up warriors.  An important part of their culture is their beautiful music, which most usually includes the playing of an ukulele, a small guitar like instrument.  They will have a whole exhibition on them and also South Pacific arts and crafts.  Of course, no culture festival would be complete without a delicious variety of native food, which they will have for purchase. It  costs $7.00 per person with children 12 and under free.
