Hallandale Beach is a city in Broward County, Florida.   This community is conveniently located between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, with access to the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Miami International airports, Port of Miami, Port Everglades and Interstate 95.  Originally named Halland, after Luther Halland, recruited to start a Swedish community, so he began developing the inexpensive property of Halland, promoting its subtropical, frost-free climate and setting up a small trading post.  Hallandale was incorporated in 1927 with a  growing population of 1,500.  By 1947, it had progressed to electricity and street lights.  Also that year it was reincorporated as a city, which allowed it to annex unincorporated  land to the east and expanding to the Atlantic Ocean.  In 1999, its name was officially changed to Hallandale Beach. With an estimated population of 38,632 in 2013, Hallandale Beach is far from the farming community it started out as.

Along the mile and a quarter stretch of , from the beach to US 1, 41 banks, savings and loans and brokerage firms exist, side by side, transforming this area into a financial mecca. It is said that Hallandale has the largest number of financial institutions per capita in the United States.  “It`s the Wall Street of the South,” “Every major financial institution is here,” quoted in the Sun Sentinel.  The wealth of Hallandale Beach`s retirees, which make up half of the city`s population, attracted the financial institutions to the area, stimulating more money and turning this into the primary business in the city.  The city’s estimated median household income is $36,245 with an average age of 52.7 years old.

Hallandale Beach is home to two of South Florida’s premiere race tracks, the Mardi Gras Casino and Gulfstream Park.  In November of 2004, a statewide referendum allowed Broward County voters to decide that they wanted to allow slot machines, which caused a major renovation of the Mardi Gras Casino by adding approximately 1,300 slot machines along with the 30 table Big Easy Poker Room. Mardi Gras Casino restaurants offers a variety of Cajun cuisine, keeping with their Mardi Gras festive theme, with The French Quarter, being its signature restaurant.  Gulfstream Park is a racetrack, casino and concert venue.  It is host of the world-class thoroughbred horse racing. During its annual meet, from December through April, it is one of the major key venues for horse racing in America.  It’s home of the Sunshine Millions series which consists of the Sunshine Millions Classic, Sunshine Millions Turf Stakes, Sunshine Millions Distaff, Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf, Sunshine Millions Sprint and Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Sprint.  Gulfstream Park has an elegant and exciting casino, complete with 850 slot machines and 20 poker tables.  The Village at Gulfstream Park, adjacent to the clubhouse, is a vibrant outdoor shopping and entertainment destination.  It features a premier collection of fashion boutiques, home accessory shops, signature restaurants, outdoor cafes and nightclubs, with many cultural activities throughout the year for the whole family to enjoy.

Hallandale Beach is served by the Broward County school system.  Hallandale High School is a magnet school that serves 1496 students in grades 9-12.  Offering three specialized curriculums or educational philosophies, Hallandale High School’s two majors are Communications and International Affairs and the Urban Teacher Academy. Under these programs, classes are based around subjects of Graphic Arts, Journalism, Broadcasting, Mechanical Engineering, Criminal Justice, Business, Medicine, The Arts, and Education.  Everest Institute North Miami, Johnson & Wales University North Miami and Barry University are all located within 10 miles of the Hallandale Beach area.
